Sometimes, screwing up is the best thing you can do.

Yesterday, as mentioned we had balmy weather. So, at lunchtime I took the D300 for walk along the Peticodiac river to see what I could find in my travels. I photographed Chateau Moncton, lots of ducks, and some nice fall colors.

As it was nice out I didn’t want to go back inside and actually work so I starting shooting the ever present seagull. Except somewhere along the line I must have hit a button and the exposure as 3 stops over exposed. (There’s a lesson here – check the settings on your camera – dont’ assume they’re correct)

I come back, and found this:  I’m sharing it because if I had metered correctly the sky would have been properly exposed and chances are with the bird being backlit it would have been almost a silhouette. But because I screwed up. I got the photo below. I like the washed out look. Your opinion may vary.

Try stuff. we’re in the days of digital. You don’t have to count frames like in film.  Do you need to take 1000 plus photos to get one keeper? IF that’s what it takes, then go for it. Although professionally schooled, it doesn’t neccesarily mean I’m good. I screw up. I show the world. Try screwing up. It’s fun.
