The Nikon D40 is one of the best ‘bang for buck’ Digital SLRs available at the price point it’s offered. At a MSRP of $599.99 it’s bargain. The fact that it’s available for much lower (currently in the $450 range) just makes this Digital Camera a best buy. No wonder it’s a top seller.
Don’t let the 6.1 Megapixels fool you. You can make wonderfully large prints out of a 6 megapixel camera, and for a second backup camera, or shooting for the web 6.1 megapixels is more than enough by far.
If you do need the higher Megapixel count, there’s the Canon Digital Rebel XSi, but it costs a bit more.
The Nikon D40 is a small, easy to handle camera with a lot of features:
Fast startup. Almost instantly. Great photos don’t wait for the camera, and a fast 2.5 FPS shutter speed allows you to shoot sports or other fast moving subjects.
Of course a DSLR without a lens is quite useless, so the Nikon D40 comes with a 18-55mm zoom that’s small, compact and lightweight, yet gives you flexibility in shooting.
The 2.5 inch LCD screen is a little on the small side by today’s standards (3 inches seem to be the popular size), but the screen is bright clear and sharp. colors are spot on too, which helps when reviewing your photos.
In-camera image editing options allow you to trim, adjust for red eye and monochrome options allow you to edit your photos in the camera and not on the computer.
The fast 3 area autofocus offers fantastic tracking ability providing you with sharp and clear photos
The built in speedlight with iTTL gives you a lightweight flash that’s always with you and the camera. Although not as flexible as a a dedicated flash, it works well and the iTTL metering is a nice option to have at the price point.
A Bright viewfinder, and 3-D color matrix metering wrap up the feature set on the Nikon D40. It’s great little camera at great price. Under $500 gets you both Camera and Lens.
