Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

The Canon Powershot SX10IS has a 20x optical Zoom and a 10 megapixel sensor. Combining these two, and it’s no wonder this is a top seller.

The 20x zoom offers a 35mm equivalent of a 28mm to 560mm zoom. That’s quite an impressive range. The 28mm end of the zoom is great for wide angle shots, landscape work, or get creative and use the wide angle to see the world as you haven’t before.  The 560mm end gets you really close to the action. This would be great for shooting birds or other animals that don’t like the idea of you getting close.

The 10 Megapixel sensor allows you to print poster sized images at ease. 10 megapixels is enough to print big 13×19 posters.

The LCD is a bit smaller than other compact Canon Cameras (Most seem to come in at 3 inches) but it offers the ‘vari-angle’ allowing you to view and compose with the screen at any angle as the screen is not built into the camera. It’s hinged allowing you to swing the display away from the camera

Other noteable features are Face detection self timer which allows you to include yourself in your photos. The camera will wait for you until your face shows up in the frame and then snap away. Also related to faces is face detection technology which finds faces in the frame, and exposes and focuses for the faces.

Intelligent contrast detection lightens the dark areas, while leaving the brighter areas of the photo properly exposed as well. An example would be shooting back lit subjects, where the light source is behind your subject.

Red Eye can be reduced by allowing the camera to identify red eye before the shot is made, or by the camera before the playback, or lastly there are controls that the user can use to remove red eye after the photo is taken.

Movie Snap allows you to shoot a still photo while shooting a movie. I won’t go into the video features of this camera as this site is dedicated to still photography

Lastly, the Canon SX10IS offers 24 different shooting scenes, or alternately you can shoot manually if you choose.

As I mentioned above, the Canon SX10is lists for $399.99, but you can get it for less from Amazon, B+H, Ritz, or Adorama.  Please consider using the links I have provided as your support helps me to help you and continue adding great content. It costs you nothing to use the links, and you don’t pay list price. We both come out ahead. Thanks! Jim
