MSRP on the SX110IS is $249.99, but with a bit of savvy shopping you can find it for much less at Amazon, Adorama, Ritz Camera and B+H.
Canon Powershot SX110IS 9MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black)
The SX110IS has 9 megapixels which is still loads of megapixels for big big prints. Unless you need to print the size of a house, don’t worry about megapixels. It was a big deal with 1 and 2 megapixel cameras but nowadays you’d have a hard time telling a blind test of a 9 or 10MP camera – all other specs being the same.
Probably one of the best features of the Canon Powershot SX110IS is the 10X zoom. Some of the cheaper cameras stop at a 3x zoom. My blackberry has a 3x optical zoom so that spec is a bit dated. A ten times zoom is a great feature and an excellent camera to travel with 10x zoom gives you a 50mm to 500mm 35 mm equivalent. What the zoom doesn’t offer is a extra wide feature so if you do need to get it all in you might be better advised to upgrade to Canon’s similarly named SX10IS which would give you both a longer zoom and a wider option too. But, you get what you pay for and the SX10IS has a MSRP of $399 which is a completely different price point.
One feature of the SX110IS is the fact that it’ll run on AA batteries. AA’s are available pretty much everywhere making this an excellent choice for a camera to travel with. Not only does it give you the flexibility of the 10x zoom, but you don’t have to drag a battery charger with you. I hate having to pack a charger with me. Some are as big as the camera it’s charging. AA’s are cheap, and easy to carry extras in your pocket.
Of course, like all other Canon Powershot Models, this one also offers Image Stabilization. Image Stabilization is a must have these days in any camera whether it be a compact camera or Digital SLR. Image Stabilization identifies and corrects camera shake. The result is less crappy photos. Instead you get sharper images every time. This is one feature worth paying for and in most cases eliminates the need to carry a bulky tripod around.
Like the other digital cameras this model offers what is a new technology in recent years: face detection. Face detection does exactly what you’d think it does. The camera detects faces and adjusts focus and exposure fore the face. If the faces aren’t sharp, you don’t have a photo. And you’ll find that if the skin tone is exposed for correctly all the other areas usually just fall into place.
I’ve written more extensively about the the red eye reduction in other models, so I’ll just touch on it here: This little Canon offers 3 methods to reduce red eye: First, is the ability to identity and correct as the photos are taken, the second method allows the SX110IS to be set to automatically detect and correct red eye during playback and the third method gives you the power to eliminate the red eye yourself using tools built in to the digital camera.
One of the greatest features of modern digital cameras has to be the ability to get great shots at high ISO when needed. The auto ISO feature allows the camera to set the perfect ISO depending on lighting conditions. Lots of light in the scene? The camera will set a low ISO giving you fantastic color and detail. When the light gets low the ISO is set higher. You’ll still get great shots that you wouldn’t have otherwise without the auto ISO feature.
The SX110IS has a modern, bigger 3 inch LCD display common on popular digital cameras of today. It offers a wide viewing angle allowing you to compose and review your shots with ease.
Lastly the SX110IS offers 20 different shooting modes including a manual mode when you want to be in full control of focus and exposure.
This is a good little compact with more than enough megapixels, a big LCD Display, and the fact that it’ll take AA’s and you don’t have to lug around a charger is a plus in my book.
As I mentioned above you’d be a fool to pay full list for this camera and as you’ve read this far I take you for no fool. Amazon, Adorama, B+H, and Ritz all offer generous discounts on this camera. If you do decide to make a purchase please consider using the links I provide. All vendors are reputable and I have no problems in recommending.
