Trying to figure out what the best digital camera is depends on so many different variables it’s almost mind boggling. When I started in photography cameras had settings for shutter speed on the camera body, aperture on the camera lens and that was pretty much it.

Fast Forward to 2010 cameras have gotten easier to use thanks to digital camera technology in the form of point and shoot and single lens reflex formats but what is the best digital camera that suits your needs? The best digital camera for sports might be a SLR, but when you have to carry a five pound camera around a SLR may not be the best camera for travel photography and what is called a bridge camera might be the best choice. Or if you just want snapshots at christmas or birthday parties or a few quick photos of the kids at halloween before they grow up and get to big to dress up and you don’t need all the buttons and gizmos a simple point and shoot might be the best choice for you as you can start with a cheap point and shoot and work your way up to a more sophisticated digital camera later.

If there’s a top selling digital camera for 2010, from what I have witnessed so far the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20 is the digital camera to buy for 2010 for those looking for a compact digital camera that’s priced well under the $200 suggested list price.  In fact, the price on this small point and shoot from Panasonic  is so low I can’t print it here.

The Nikon S570 is the in-between digital camera when you compare the two above. The S570 offers the  same small compact size as the Nikon Coolpix L22, but offers  much features and flexibility  in a camera that is  both smaller and cheaper than the Nikon Coolpix P100 above. At 12 megapixels the Nikon S570 can make  stunning sized prints up to 16×20 in size and the zoom lens, while not the huge 26x zoom the P100 offers, does offer a wide angle 5x Nikkor zoom lens in a package that is much smaller than the Nikon P100. The lens also features advanced four way image stabilization that is exclusive to the Nikon S570 as well, and a Smart Auto system takes the guesswork out of complicated camera settings and allows you to shoot on full automatic  and let the little Nikon  worry about complicated camera settings.  The Nikon Coolpix S570 price is supposed to be  $179 but I found a better deal on the Nikon S570 at Amazon and I didn’t have  to wait either as it shipped overnight with free shipping. Canon Powershot SX20is Digital Camera Review

BEST price Canon SX20isThe Canon SX20is digital camera has one very, very important feature that in my own opinion makes the Canon SX20is a best selling digital camera and beats a lot of other digital cameras on the market today:

A 20x zoom lens

This one feature (actually there’s another but we’ll get to that in a moment) makes this the best and one of the cheaper digital cameras that are perfect for travelling this summer. With the Canon SX20is you can carry only one camera with you yet still make great photos and use the flexibility that only a 20x zoom lens can offer.

With a 20x zoom lens you can shoot, wide angle photos such a landscape photographs or maybe you need a wide angle lens to take with you to a family reunion this summer and  make a great group photo of your entire family. Whatever the reason for your need for a wide angle  lens, the Canon SX20is has you covered with a wide angle of up to  28mm equivalent when considered to the standard full frame, or FX standard. 28mm is not considered an ultrawide lens but 28mm  will still give you a great field of view that is much much wider than what the human eye sees.

Now, on the long end of the spectrum  - how about when you need to shoot far away with the Canon SX20is. The lens zooms out to a whopping 560mm zoom  ratio. What this does is gets you close to the action when  you can’t. One example might be for photographing boats on the bay or when you need to shoot sports such as your kid’s soccer game or summer camp activities.

Of course the SX20is is a fully image stabilized lens too (thus the ‘is’ in the camera’s name) and this offers bright and clear  photos that you can’t get normally or when you don’t have a tripod. The other feature that I think makes the Canon SX2ois a great travel camera is the fact that the the Canon SX20is runs on plain old AA batteries which are available pretty much anywhere, or if you prefer you can toss a few AA’s  into your bag and rest assured you’ll have enough power for your travels. This is much easier than having to find worry about different  voltages and converters when travelling abroad. And of course, there’ no charger to pack either which is another great bonus with the Canon SX20is’

The Canon SX20is also offers enough megapixels at 12.1 megapixels, which  is more than enough resolution for high end  and big size prints.

High Definition Recording at 720ps with sound that’s in stereo too means you can use the SX20 and the flexibility of the big zoom lens to make great looking HD movies that you can share with friends and family later using  the HDMI connector which allows you to hook the camera up to your TV for larger than life viewing of your favorite movies.

Smart Auto is the last thing I want to talk about, because if you’re like me you don’t want to have to do  any thinking when shooting on holidays. I have found the best online store to buy the Kodak  Playsport ZX3 would be Amazon. They offer up front pricing, it usually doesn’t take much to get free shipping on the Kodak ZX3 and sometimes there’s even special offers on this popular digital camera too.

With a street price of about $150  when you buy with Amazon, you save money on the digital video recorder from Kodak as well and due to the way Amazon is set up  you can usually buy the Kodak ZX3 from Amazon, or other vendors but Amazon will still take care of the sale for you.

Some camera stores might complain and say that Amazon is just selling boxes, and you don’t get the ‘customer service’ that you would if you bought the Kodak Video Camera from them. And this may be true and if you do need some more advice before deciding on where to buy a waterproof digital camera you might be better off doing some more homework and contacting a few more online camera stores. I can recommend B+H, Adorama, and Ritz as reputable camera stores that might offer more expertise than what Amazon can provide.

Nikon Coolpix S8000 Digital Camera Review

The Nikon Coolpix S8000 small and compact digital camera offer a whole lot of features considering it’s size and price.  With a suggested retail price of $299, it’s still a deal of a digital camera,but with discounts you can buy the Nikon S8000 for much less than the ‘suggested price’ might be.

But enough about the Nikon S8000 price, what makes or breaks a digital camera is it’s feature set and the Nikon S8000 is no slouch. Offering 14 megapixels (actually, 14.2) and a 10x optical zoom lens and 3 inch LCD you’d think that would be enough features right there to command the $250 street price (approx) of the Nikon S8000.

But Nikon has filled the Coolpix S8000 with a lot more features than just a digital camera with a high megapixel count and a 10x zoom lens. Although those are a great start, and  without these the Nikon S8000 would easily be passed over for a much higher digital camera, or even a small digital SLR camera such as the Nikon D5000.

Big Prints. That’s the first thing that comes to mind why I might choose to buy the Nikon S8000 over a lesser digita camera such as the entry level Nikon Coolpix L22  (another great camera from Nikon) is the fact that the Nikon S8000 can print up to 20 inches by 30 inches with ease from it’s 14.2 megapixels of resolution. You can shoot knowing that the Nikon Coolpix S8000 is no slouch when it comes to handling  poster sized print sizes.

HD Movie Recording.

This is becoming a pretty standard feature on most small and compact digital cameras, especially in this price range of $300. 720p HD video recording comes as a standard feature on the Nikon Coolpix S8000 digital camera and it offers movie like recording at a full 30 frames per second and also includes  HDMI output  so you can connect the Nikon S8000 to a TV or monitor and share your movies with your friends, or share them on facebook, you tube or other favorite video sharing sites.

Bright Lens with Bright LCD display

It would be easy to gloss over these two features and there’s certainly other digital cameras that offer more zoom range, but the Nikon S8000 differentiates itself, even if the 10x zoom ratio isn’t as big a stretch as other digital cameras. Firstly, the Nikon S8000 offers a smaller footprint than the higher zoom digital cameras, as they mostly are considered bridge cameras and as such are more shaped like small dslr cameras. And secondly, the zoom lens on the Nikon S8000 offers high quality ED Nikkor glass that results in sharp and clear photos. If I had to choose any  part of the digital camera not to scrimp on, it would be the lens.  A good digital camera can be ruined by a cheap lens.

Lastly , the 3 inch LCD display  is a good size, but is also a high resolution lcd screen with more than 900,000 dots for bright and crisp digital displays that look good in any light, allowing you to easily compose and shoot your favorite  photos on the  Nikon S8000.

The Nikon S8000 is not the cheapest digital camera, but it offers both high resolution movie and still photography with a 10x zoom lens that includes high quality ED Nikon Glass not found on lesser nikon compact cameras and also inludes a nice bright 3 inch LCD display.

As I mentioned earlier, the price on the Nikon S8000 is suggested at $299 but I have found the best price on the Nikon S8000 to be at Amazon, but you might want to check Ritz, B+H, and Adorama as they have been known to offer Nikon S8000 deals from time to time too.
